Black Head Pythons
Some snakes are cool, some are impressive. There are just a select few that are simply awesome. The Black Head Python (Aspidites melanocephalus) is one of the most awesome. There is an Eastern and Western phase of Black Head Python. The eastern type gets a bit larger and is the type I'm working with.

My experience with the Black Head Pythons (BHP's) is that they are pretty calm snakes. The female tends to be a bit jumpy once she has gotten good and warm, but with just a few degrees of cooling at night, seems to be quite mellow. Once in hand she's quite docile. The male is always docile.

Black Head Python females are larger than males and grow to about 3 meters, or just shy of 10 feet. Weights of up to 16 Kg, or 35 lbs have been recorded.

Although they are pythons, I personally think they "feel" more like a giant colubrid. Imagine a 10 foot long kingsnake and you'll have an idea of what it's like to handle a big Black Head Python.
I have my Black Heads in a cage that has a couple warm spots and cool spots. A large water dish is provided. I make no other effort to increase humidity.

Black Heads are good feeders and have no special or unusual diet. Rats are fine. I usually feed mine large meals once every 3 weeks to a month. As they approach adulthood, the frequency of feeding the male decreases.
Although Black Head Pythons have proven to be somewhat problematic for breeders, we produced babies in 2005.
